Chapter 2 - BEFORE SUNRISE

Noah would not let go of me.

Not when the last guests left. Not when the musicians packed their instruments. Not when Eleanor told the remaining staff to clear the room.

Alexander finally crouched in front of us. “Noah.”

His son shook his head. “She’s leaving.”

Alexander looked at me. “Are you?”

I hated that Noah was hearing this. “I planned to.”

“When?”

“Before sunrise.”

His jaw tightened. “Why?”

Eleanor answered for me. “Because Miss Carter understands boundaries.”

Alexander stood. “What does that mean?”

“Your son has become overly attached to household staff.”

Eleanor continued. “This evening proved it.”

“No,” Alexander said. “This evening proved he was terrified.”

“He embarrassed three families.”

“He is five.”

“He is a Sterling.”

Alexander laughed once. “That is not a diagnosis.”

Three nights earlier, Eleanor had called me into her sitting room. She told me the selection ceremony would mark a new chapter. Once Alexander selected a wife, Noah would need a clean transition.

I asked for two weeks so Noah would not wake up and find me gone.

“Children adapt faster when adults stop indulging attachment,” she had said.

That was when I wrote the resignation myself. If I was going to disappear from Noah’s life, I wanted it to be my decision, not something done to me in front of him.

I thought leaving before sunrise would hurt less.

Alexander listened without interrupting. Then he looked at his mother.

“You fired her?”

“I intended to.”

“Without telling me?”

“This is household management.”

“This is my son.”

Eleanor’s mouth tightened. “Which is exactly why you need to stop letting employees replace family.”

Noah whispered against my shoulder, “Grandma said Emma goes away when I get a new mommy.”

Alexander went still. “When did she say that?”

Eleanor did. “He misunderstood.”

Alexander looked at his son. “Noah.”

The little boy lifted his head. “Grandma said the new mommy can’t love me if Emma is still here.”

The silence that followed felt heavier than the ballroom had.

Then Noah said, “And she said tomorrow I go to the school with locks.”
