THE BLACK DYE WEDDING / Chapter 12 / 20

Chapter 12 - THE VIDEO WITH NO BEGINNING

Mom called that evening from a number I didn't recognize.

“You embarrassed your sister at the wedding,” she said without greeting.

“You destroyed my wedding morning. There's a difference.”

“People are asking about the trust. Tell them you've misunderstood.”

“Have you returned the money?”

Silence.

Then her voice softened in the old, dangerous way. “Evelyn, honey, marriages don't always last. But your family is forever.”

“Forever isn't permission to steal.”

She hung up.

The next day, another edited video appeared online. It showed me demanding that Vanessa leave the suite. Mom called my response a 'public episode' and claimed I'd been too distressed to understand financial documents.

At work, my boss, Dr. Chen, closed the treatment-room door. “I saw the post. Are you safe?”

I almost cried at the question. It was so ordinary, and my own mother hadn't asked it once.

“I'm safe,” I said. “But someone is telling lies about me.”

“Then we document facts. You were here the Thursday that guarantee says you signed. I can provide the schedule and staff statements.”

That afternoon Rachel and Janelle brought Amelia the unedited footage. On screen, Mom entered the hallway behind Vanessa carrying a white shopping bag. They went into the suite together. Seven minutes later Vanessa emerged without the bag. Then came the sounds of my shouting.

“Mom brought the dye,” I said.

Rachel paused the video. “Look at what she's holding on the way out.”

A black-stained tissue was tucked into Helen's palm.

Amelia copied the recording and sent a formal preservation notice to the venue. Then she played a second clip from the corridor camera. It captured Mom leaning close to Vanessa after the attack.

Her words were faint, but clear enough.

“Now she'll cancel, and we'll have until Monday to finish.”
