Chapter 18 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Vanessa called after dark. She wasn't crying this time.
“Mom wants me to take all the blame,” she said. “She says she'll pay my legal bills if I sign.”
“Don't sign something false,” I told her.
“You sound like Ethan.”
“Then listen to both of us.”
Vanessa was quiet. “I hated watching him choose you. I convinced myself you had stolen the life I deserved.”
“Ethan wasn't a prize someone could steal.”
“I know that now.”
She told me she'd sent him the proposition because Mom said he was interested in money and could be pulled away. The dye was meant to cause a public meltdown and cancel the ceremony, buying time before the lender's final advance. Mom had brought the bottle. Vanessa had poured it. Both had known what they were doing.
“Will you say all that to Amelia?” I asked.
“Yes.”
For one dangerous moment, relief made me believe everything could be fixed.
The next day Mom's lawyer sent a settlement proposal. Helen would step down as trustee, Vanessa would sell the studio, and I would receive $70,000 immediately. In exchange, I had to release all claims, withdraw reports, and promise never to discuss the wedding incident publicly.
“Seventy thousand for three hundred thousand dollars and a stolen wedding morning,” Rachel said. “What a bargain.”
Amelia gave me time to decide. I read each page carefully, hearing Rose's voice: choices, not obligations.
“No,” I said. “No bargain that calls this a misunderstanding.”

At six that evening Vanessa sent me a voice message. She said she'd refused to sign Mom's false statement. Then I heard a door slam and a man's voice in the background telling her to put down her phone.
The recording ended mid-sentence.
