Chapter 19 - THE DOOR WE OPENED

Ethan and I drove to Vanessa's studio. The lights were on, and she was standing outside with a cardboard box. She looked exhausted but unhurt.
“Mom fired me from my own company,” she said bitterly. “At least, she says she did. Turns out she owned the controlling interest all along.”
She showed us the operating agreement. Helen had arranged the business under her own holding company. Vanessa was the public face; Mom controlled the accounts and had signed off on the transfers.
For the first time, Vanessa looked directly at me without the familiar challenge in her eyes.
“I poured the dye. You didn't make me do it. But she told me if I canceled your wedding, you'd finally stop asking questions.”
I felt no victory. Only the weight of the truth.
Vanessa met Amelia with her own lawyer. She gave a statement, turned over the operating agreement and messages, and acknowledged her part in the dress attack. We reported the suspected forgery and unauthorized use of my identity to the proper investigators. No one went straight from a confession to prison. There were interviews, filings, hearings, and months of waiting.
At the next trust hearing, Daniel testified about the witness signature. The retired notary confirmed the stamp wasn't hers. The judge removed Helen as trustee and appointed an independent professional while the money was traced. Ruth's succession clause remained part of the record.
Helen looked across the room at me. I expected tears. Instead she said, “You're really doing this to your own mother?”
I answered in a voice everyone could hear.
“No. I'm telling the truth about what you did to your daughter.”
Outside the courthouse, Daniel approached with his hands in his pockets.
“Do we get to start over?” he asked.
“I don't know,” I said. “But you can keep telling the truth.”

Amelia called before we reached the parking garage. The independent trustee had found a buyer for Blue Aster's equipment and a recoverable account Helen hadn't disclosed.
It was the first real chance of getting Rose's money back.
