Chapter 1 - THE SPILL

The glass hit the marble before anyone understood what had happened.

Water splashed across the front of Vivian Cross's wedding gown. The ballroom went silent.

Noah Bennett, a twenty-three-year-old waiter carrying a silver tray, froze beside her. "Ma'am, I'm so sorry. Someone bumped me. I can get towels. I can-"

Vivian slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room harder than the glass.

Noah stumbled sideways, one hand rising to his cheek. A few guests gasped. Most simply stared.

Vivian looked down at the wet lace on her dress as if he had thrown acid on her. "Do you have any idea what this gown costs?"

"Vivian," Daniel Mercer said from the head table.

She ignored him.

"You people get one job," she snapped at Noah. "Carry a tray. Smile. Stay out of the pictures. Is that really too difficult?"

Noah's face burned. "I said I'm sorry."

"Sorry doesn't fix stupid."

Daniel slowly stood.

He had spent the entire day watching Vivian smile at cameras, hug his mother, thank the priest, and tell every guest how blessed she felt. Now her voice sounded different. Sharper. Familiar in a way he could not immediately place.

Noah bent to pick up the broken glass.

Vivian nudged one shard toward him with the toe of her shoe. "Clean it."

Daniel walked down from the platform.

"Don't," he said.

Noah looked up.

Vivian blinked. "Don't what?"

Daniel took the towel from a stunned server and handed it to Noah. "Don't kneel."

Then he faced his bride.

"Apologize."

A nervous laugh escaped Vivian. "Daniel, please. It was an accident, and he's staff."

"I know who he is. I asked you to apologize."

Her smile returned for the guests, polished and brittle. "Fine. I'm sorry you spilled water on me."

Daniel stared at her.

"That's not an apology."

Vivian's eyes hardened. "Do not embarrass me at my own wedding."

Daniel looked around at three hundred guests.

May you like

Then he reached for the microphone.

"Actually," he said, "I don't think there is going to be a wedding."
