Chapter 17 - WHY VIVIAN CHOSE HIM

Daniel waited until Vivian was discharged before asking.

They met in a quiet hospital garden away from cameras.

Her arm was in a sling.

"My mother said to ask why you chose me."

Vivian looked tired.

"Of course she did."

"So answer."

She stared at the fountain.

"When we met four years ago, it wasn't accidental."

Daniel said nothing.

"My mother knew your father had left evidence. She believed it might pass to you after his estate closed. She wanted me close enough to know if you found anything."

The words landed exactly where Celia intended.

"So our relationship started as surveillance."

"Yes."

Daniel stood.

"But it didn't stay that way."

He laughed bitterly. "That is the sentence people use when they want the lie to sound romantic."

"I loved you."

"And still let your mother use me."

"Yes."

No excuse.

That surprised him more than denial would have.

Vivian wiped tears from her face. "I became exactly the kind of person she taught me to be. I thought being feared meant being safe. Staff couldn't hurt me. Vendors couldn't say no. People with less power became targets because I knew there would be no consequence."

"Until Noah."

"Until you saw me clearly."

Daniel looked at her.

"No. Until Noah paid for your lesson with his dignity, and his son paid with his safety. Don't turn other people's pain into your redemption story."

Vivian nodded slowly.

"You're right."

She handed him an envelope.

Inside was a list of every employee and contractor she remembered mistreating.

Forty-six names.

"I'm giving statements to the police," she said. "And I'm releasing every NDA my mother used."

Daniel closed the envelope.

"Good."

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

"Good."

He walked away.

Then Vivian called after him.

"Daniel. There is one more name you should know."

May you like

He turned.

"Noah Bennett's mother."
