Chapter 19 - THE MESSAGE HIS FATHER LEFT

Arthur's voice was weaker than Daniel remembered.

"Teresa, if things go badly tonight, promise me something."

"What?"

"Don't let Daniel become me."

There was a soft laugh.

"What's wrong with you?"

"I spent thirty years believing being a decent man was enough. It isn't. You have to notice what happens around you. You have to ask who pays the cost of your comfort."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Arthur continued.

"My son is kind. But he was born into rooms where people clear his plate before he notices it is empty. That can make a person blind without making him cruel. Blindness still hurts people."

Noah stared at the recorder.

Daniel couldn't speak.

"Tell him to look down sometimes," Arthur said. "Not because people are beneath him. Because someone might be standing there waiting to be seen."

The recording ended.

For a long moment, the attic was silent.

Noah finally said, "Your dad sounds like he would've tipped well."

Daniel laughed through tears.

"He did. Annoyingly well."

Weeks passed.

Celia was charged with kidnapping conspiracy, fraud, extortion, evidence tampering, and obstruction related to Arthur's death.

Eric Lawson pleaded guilty to financial crimes and conspiracy.

Marissa cooperated with prosecutors.

Vivian faced assault charges and civil claims from former staff. She sold her apartment and placed much of the money into restitution funds.

Daniel refused every interview asking whether he would take her back.

The answer was simple.

No.

Saving Claire did not erase what Vivian had done.

Regret was not a time machine.

One month after the canceled wedding, Daniel returned to the hotel ballroom.

Not for a ceremony.

For a meeting with Halston Events staff.

Noah stood in the back holding Eli's hand.

Daniel announced a new worker-protection fund for contracted event staff and legal support for employees pressured into abusive NDAs.

Afterward, Eli tugged Daniel's sleeve.

"Are you the guy who stopped the wedding?"

Daniel crouched.

"I guess so."

Eli considered him seriously.

"My dad says it was because of water."

Noah groaned. "That's not exactly what I said."

Eli grinned.

May you like

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Vivian walked in.
