Chapter 9 - THE OLD DINNER

Daniel had spent three years refusing to revisit the night his father died.

Now he opened every file.

Marcus pulled archived security records from the Mercer Foundation dinner. Most had been deleted after ninety days, but one backup remained in a private server.

The footage showed Daniel's father, Arthur, entering a library with Celia Cross at 7:42 p.m.

At 8:05, Celia left alone.

At 8:11, Arthur stumbled into the hallway clutching his chest.

The camera had no audio.

Daniel watched his father fall three times.

"Stop," Vivian whispered.

He didn't.

Marcus found the medical report. Stroke. Massive cerebral hemorrhage. No evidence of foul play.

Then Claire Mercer arrived.

Daniel's younger sister was still wearing a black dress from the ruined wedding.

"Mom told me," she said. "Is Eli okay?"

"He's safe."

Claire saw the frozen image of their father on the screen.

Her face changed.

"Why are you watching that?"

Daniel explained.

Claire sat down.

"There was something Dad gave me before that dinner."

She left and returned twenty minutes later with an old envelope from a safe-deposit box.

Inside was a handwritten note.

If anything happens to me, look at the Haven accounts.

Daniel frowned. "Haven?"

Marcus searched the company archives.

Haven Outreach had been a joint Mercer-Cross charity fund managing nearly forty million dollars.

It dissolved two weeks after Arthur's death.

Money had moved to six shell organizations first.

Then disappeared.

Vivian read over Daniel's shoulder.

"My mother ran Haven."

"And my father audited it."

Daniel's phone buzzed with an incoming email.

No sender name.

Subject: YOUR FATHER WAS RIGHT.

Attached was a scan of a bank transfer authorizing twelve million dollars from Haven to a company owned by Celia.

Below it was a second attachment.

A photograph taken inside the library the night Arthur died.

Celia stood inches from him.

And in her hand was a small bottle of pills.
