Chapter 10 - THE SECRET ROBERT KEPT

The offshore payments were not tax fraud.
They were worse in a different way.
Daniel opened eleven years of records on the conference screen.
Every month, Robert Caldwell sent $12,000 to an account in Montreal.
The beneficiary was a woman named Claire Mercer.
Mary stared at the name.
Evelyn arrived twenty minutes later.
She saw the screen and sat down without being asked.
“You knew,” Mary said.
Mary’s anger cracked open.
“Who is she?”
Evelyn looked toward the dark window.
“Your father’s daughter.”
Evelyn’s voice shook. “Before your father met me, he was engaged to Claire’s mother. There was a pregnancy. He didn’t learn about the child until years later.”
Mary tried to understand.
“I have a sister?”
“Half sister. Claire is forty-one.”
“And Dad paid her in secret?”
“He helped her because she asked for privacy. Her mother hated this family. Claire didn’t want the name, the press, any of it.”
“The account is legal. Taxes were paid. Ethan made it look suspicious by routing copies of the transfers through a folder labeled ‘foreign liabilities.’”
Mary laughed bitterly.
“So his weapon is embarrassment.”
“And division,” Evelyn said.
Mary looked at her mother.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“It wasn’t my secret.”
Mary wanted to scream.
“Where does Claire live?”
“Boston.”
Daniel’s fingers moved across his keyboard.
“Not tonight.”
A flight reservation had been booked for Claire Mercer two days earlier.
Hotel: same hotel as Mary’s wedding.
“Did Dad invite her?”
“No.”
Mary’s phone buzzed.
A photo arrived from Robert’s number.
Robert sat in a chair in an unfamiliar apartment. He looked furious but unharmed.
Behind him, reflected in a mirror, stood a woman with dark hair.
ASK YOUR SISTER WHY SHE CAME.
Mary enlarged the reflection.
“That’s Claire.”

Then a second message appeared.
