Chapter 16 - THE FAKE FAMILY

The pattern became clear by noon.

Ethan had collected signatures for years.

Holiday cards.

He had enough samples to reproduce everyone.

But he had not done it alone.

The fake Evelyn trust had been notarized by someone named Howard Pike.

Robert knew the name immediately.

“Eleanor’s old estate lawyer.”

Howard Pike was eighty-two and living in assisted care in Connecticut.

“I never notarized anything for Ethan Pierce,” he said over video. “But that boy visited me twice.”

“When?” Mary asked.

“Last year.”

“Why?”

“He said he was writing a family history for your wedding.”

Mary shut her eyes.

Something sentimental enough that nobody would question why he wanted documents.

Pike leaned closer to the camera.

“He asked about old trust language. Conversion clauses. Voting rights.”

Daniel asked, “Did you give him copies?”

“I gave him public versions.”

“And I told him about Eleanor’s private archive.”

Robert’s face changed.

“What archive?”

“Your mother kept duplicate originals in a safe-deposit vault.”

“Where?”

Someone had entered the vault six times in eighteen months.

Authorized visitor: Ethan Pierce.

Robert slammed his fist onto the table.

“How did he get authorization?”

“Probably forged.”

Mary was no longer shocked by the word.

The bank sent security footage.

Ethan appeared in five visits.

On the sixth, someone else entered beside him.

A woman in a cap and dark glasses.

Claire leaned toward the screen.

“That’s not Vanessa.”

Mary paused the frame.

The woman turned toward the camera for half a second.

Robert whispered, “No.”

Mary looked between them.

“Who is she?”

Mary raised her voice.

“Who is she?”

Claire stood very slowly.

“I know her.”

“That’s my mother.”

Robert stared at the image of the woman he had not seen in forty years.

May you like

Claire’s voice cracked.

“My mother is supposed to be dead.”
