Chapter 15 - THE NAME IN THE FILE

Ethan was handcuffed at 8:12 a.m.

He did not fight.

That frightened Mary more than if he had.

As agents walked him toward the elevator, he glanced over his shoulder.

“Check the buyer.”

Daniel opened the acquisition files again.

The buyer was listed as Northstar Strategic Holdings.

Clean website. Clean filings. Clean money.

Claire sat beside Daniel.

“I’ve seen that name.”

“Where?”

“In my mother’s papers.”

“My mother worked for Caldwell Meridian before I was born.”

Robert had met Claire’s mother at the company.

“She believed Eleanor Caldwell forced her out after she got pregnant.”

Robert looked wounded.

“That’s not what happened.”

“You’ve had forty years to tell your version.”

“Claire—”

“Not now.”

Daniel searched old corporate records.

Northstar had been formed through a chain of LLCs.

One registration led to a law office.

Another led to a family trust.

The final beneficiary was hidden.

Arthur leaned toward the screen.

“Can we subpoena it?”

The federal agent said, “Already in process.”

Mary’s phone vibrated.

Mary stared at her own face on the screen, photographed in her wedding gown outside the boardroom.

Her life had become breaking news before breakfast.

“Go home.”

“Not yet.”

At 9:03, the subpoena response arrived.

Daniel opened the ownership record.

Mary slowly turned toward her mother.

“That’s impossible.”

“Evelyn?”

“I have never heard of Northstar.”

Daniel checked the trust identifier.

“It is tied to a trust created in your name.”

“I didn’t create it.”

Mary looked at the signature page.

Her mother’s signature was there.

Then Claire whispered, “Ethan wasn’t forging one person.”

Mary looked at her.

Claire’s eyes were fixed on the files.

“He was building an entire fake family.”
