Chapter 17 - HELEN MERCER

Helen Mercer had died on paper nine years earlier.

There was a death certificate.

A funeral.

Helen had supposedly died overseas after a stroke.

Claire sat frozen while Daniel’s investigators pulled records.

A woman using the name Helen Moore.

Mary watched Claire break apart quietly.

“She called me before she died,” Claire whispered. “She said she was tired. She said she loved me.”

“Don’t.”

At 2:16 p.m., federal agents found Helen Mercer in a furnished apartment twenty miles outside the city.

Mary expected a criminal mastermind.

Helen was seventy, thin, silver-haired, and painfully calm.

“You got old.”

“So did you.”

Claire stood in the corner, arms wrapped around herself.

“I’m sorry.”

“No. You don’t get to start there.”

“Why Ethan?”

“Because he found me.”

“How?”

“He was researching your family. He found irregularities in my death records.”

“And you helped him steal my company?”

“I helped him build leverage against the Caldwells.”

“Your grandmother destroyed my career. She threatened me when I was pregnant. She made sure I would never work in the industry again.”

Robert shook his head. “You told me you left.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother offered me money to disappear.”

Mary felt the floor drop under the family story she had grown up believing.

“I wanted the company to pay.”

“So you partnered with Ethan.”

“At first.”

“What changed?”

“He became greedy. He wanted everything.”

“And me?”

“I never meant to involve you.”

“You faked your death.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“That sentence should be illegal.”

Mary almost smiled despite everything.

Then Helen turned back to Mary.

“There’s one thing Ethan never told you.”

“What?”

Helen looked at Robert.

“The original trust doesn’t make Mary the final controlling beneficiary.”

Robert whispered, “Helen, don’t.”

May you like

Helen said it anyway.

“Claire is.”
