Chapter 16 - BUNNY

Owen never made it outside.
Police arrested him in the kitchen after he tried to escape through the basement.
No shots.
No heroic fight.
Just handcuffs and a man suddenly smaller than the fear he had created.
I went straight to Emma.
She was at Ramirez's sister's house with a child advocate.
I held Bunny carefully.
"Sweetheart, did Mommy ever put something inside him?"
Emma nodded.
I almost stopped breathing.
"What did she say?"
"Secret."
"Did she tell you when to give it to me?"
Emma thought.
"When monster mommy comes."
My eyes filled.
Claire had made the instruction simple enough for a toddler to remember.
Not Vanessa.
A monster mommy.
A stranger who tried to replace her by force.
With Emma's permission, a forensic technician opened the old seam beneath Bunny's ear.
Inside was a microSD card wrapped in plastic.
Claire's evidence.
It held Hearth emails, fake research forms, photographs of Caleb installing "sensors," and recordings about Emma's trust.
And one video Claire made herself.
She sat at our kitchen table.
Tired.
Scared.
Alive.
"Daniel, if you're watching this, I didn't get a chance to explain."
I covered my mouth.
Claire continued.
"Hearth isn't helping families. They're studying how grief changes decision-making, then using that information to sell services and gain access to children with trusts."
She looked directly into the camera.
"I don't know how criminal it is yet. I only know someone has been inside our house."
"I haven't told you because I know you. You'll confront them before I have proof."
Even now, she knew me.
"If something happens to me, don't become angry first."
I laughed through tears.
"Listen first."
Emma climbed into my lap.
On screen, Claire smiled sadly.
"And if Emma tells you she's afraid of someone, believe the fear before you understand the reason."
I held my daughter tighter.

Claire had left me the answer.
I had simply received it eighteen months too late.
