Chapter 9 - CLAIRE KNEW

I opened Claire's letter in Ramirez's office.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, I was right to be worried.
A group called Hearth contacted me three times about Emma. They knew things I never told them. Her sleep schedule. The rabbit my mother gave her. The amount of the education trust.
I reported the calls, but they stopped before police could identify anyone.
If they approach you after I'm gone, do not assume kindness means coincidence.
My hands shook.
Claire continued.
I changed Emma's trust so no spouse, partner, counselor, school, or residential program can gain control simply because you authorize temporary care.
I nearly laughed from relief.
Vanessa could not have taken the trust.
Not directly.
So what did Hearth want?
Susan answered.
"Control of placement."
"What does that mean?"
"The trust pays approved expenses for Emma's education, medical care, and residential support."
Ramirez understood first.
"They couldn't take the principal."
Susan nodded.
"But an approved residential provider could bill the trust."
"How much?"
"Potentially hundreds of thousands per year."
Hearth House.
A fake residential program.
They were not just manipulating children.
They were building recurring revenue from their trusts.
Michael Bennett swore under his breath.
He had nearly signed Sophie into the same structure.
Susan showed us Claire's amended clause.
Any residential placement over thirty days required approval from an independent child advocate.
"That's why Vanessa needed Emma to look unstable," I said.
"Yes," Ramirez replied. "If they could create a documented crisis, they could push for emergency placement first and fight about approval later."
Emma had been locked away.
Provoked.
Told her mother died because of her.
Everything could be written down as evidence of emotional disturbance.
My anger became cold.
Precise.
"When did Vanessa learn about Claire's amendment?"
Ramirez looked toward the interview room.
"Let's ask her."
Vanessa read the clause and covered her face.
"Owen said it didn't matter."
"What did he tell you?" I asked.
"That once Emma had a crisis on camera, a judge would approve temporary treatment."
"You were creating the crisis."
She started crying.
"I thought I could stop before it went too far."
"You married me."
"I know."
"You slept beside me."
"I know."
"You let my daughter call you family while you documented her fear."
Vanessa looked at me.
"Owen picked you before I ever met you."

Then she said the sentence that changed the case again.
"But I wasn't the first person he sent into your house."
