Chapter 1 - The Backward Strap

The sound of Dominic Vale's cane striking the marble floor cracked through the great room like a gunshot.

One hard tap.

Then silence.

Six men behind the glass conference-room doors turned at once.

Vincent Hale, Dominic's head of security, moved first. "Hey. Don't touch him."

Clare Rowan spun from the linen cart. "Ellie!"

But her four-year-old daughter was already kneeling beside Dominic's injured left leg, one small hand resting on the lowest strap of his orthopedic brace.

Dominic looked down at her. "What is it?"

Ellie pointed at a silver tab. "That shiny part is backward."

Clare went pale. "Mr. Vale, I'm so sorry."

Dominic raised one hand and the room obeyed him.

His doctors called it a setback.

Arthur Voss called it proof Dominic could no longer lead the Vale companies.

Tonight, the board intended to vote on temporary authority.

Dr. Samuel Mercer crouched beside the brace and loosened the strap. His fingers stopped.

"What?" Dominic asked.

Mercer swallowed. "The retaining plate is reversed."

"Could that happen naturally?"

"No."

The room changed.

Mercer explained that the reversed plate could create uneven pressure, swelling, nerve pain, and the appearance of worsening mobility.

Dominic rose slowly.

The pain was still there, but the crushing bite around his calf had eased.

He took three careful steps.

Behind the glass, Arthur Voss watched him.

Dominic turned to Vincent. "Lock the estate."

Arthur entered at once. "Dominic, that seems excessive."

Dominic studied him. "I haven't told you what we found."

Arthur stopped.

That was the first mistake.

The second came when Ellie whispered, "I saw the man click it yesterday."

Dominic crouched. "What man?"

Her tiny finger lifted toward the conference room.

It moved past five faces.

Then stopped on Arthur Voss.

Arthur's patient smile vanished.

Dominic tightened his grip on the cane.

"The vote is postponed," he said.

Arthur's jaw flexed. "On what grounds?"

"Mine."

Then Dominic looked at Vincent.

"Pull every camera recording from the rehabilitation wing for the last month. Make copies before anyone knows what we are looking for."

Vincent nodded and moved.

Ellie tugged at Clare's uniform.

"Mommy?"

Clare bent toward her.

Ellie whispered loudly enough for Dominic to hear.

"The silver man told me not to tell."

Dominic turned back toward Arthur.

Arthur was no longer looking at him.

He was staring at the child.
