Chapter 17 - The Tunnel

Detective Chen ordered everyone back.
Marcus held the remote high enough for Dominic to see it.
Nathan's daughter, Emily, stood rigid beside him.
"Let her go," Dominic said.
Marcus smiled. "You always did care about strangers when it made you look noble."
"She isn't a stranger."
"That's your weakness."
Dominic shook his head. "No. That's the difference between us."
Marcus's smile vanished.
Dominic kept him talking while officers moved behind concrete pillars.
"Caleb Rowan knew what you were doing. You killed him."
"Caleb should have minded his business."
The confession echoed through the loading bay.
Detective Chen's body camera caught every word.
"And my crash?"
Marcus shrugged. "You were supposed to die cleanly. Arthur panicked when you survived."
Arthur shouted from behind police cover. "You said nobody would get hurt!"
Marcus laughed.
"Arthur, people have been getting hurt around you for twenty years. You just preferred paperwork to blood."
That broke him.
Arthur stood and pointed toward the tunnel ceiling.
"The charges are fake!"
Marcus turned.
One second.
That was enough.
Emily dropped to the floor.
Vincent tackled Marcus from the side.
The remote skidded across concrete.
Dominic trapped it beneath his cane.
Marcus swung at Vincent, but officers overwhelmed him.
No explosion came.
Arthur had been right.
The flashing lights were part of an old construction warning system, not live explosives.
Marcus had bluffed.
As officers pulled him upright, he looked at Dominic with pure hatred.
"You think this ends because you found me?"
Dominic stared back.
"No. It ends because everyone finally sees you."
Marcus smiled strangely.
"Then ask Vincent what he did eight years ago."
May you like
Dominic turned.
Vincent's face had gone pale.
