Chapter 14 - The Second Mole
Dominic ordered the convoy stopped before it left the property.
Only eight people knew about the hostage location.
Dominic.
Vincent.
Detective Chen.
Two officers.
Mercer.
Clare.
And board member Nathan Cole, who had remained nearby during the briefing.
Dominic looked at Nathan.
Nathan looked offended before anyone accused him.
That was enough to start looking.
Vincent checked network activity.
A message had left Nathan's smartwatch thirty seconds after the address was spoken aloud.
Nathan collapsed into a chair.
"He has my daughter."
Dominic felt the room grow colder.
"Where?"
"I don't know. She disappeared yesterday from Northwestern. Marcus sent me a photograph."
Nathan handed over his watch and phone.
Detective Chen changed the operation immediately.
The visible police convoy went south as planned.
A smaller tactical team moved north in unmarked vehicles.
Dominic stayed at the estate, exactly where Marcus expected him to remain.
At 2:40 p.m., the team reached the Wisconsin property.
The cabin was empty.
But in the basement they found Angela Pierce alive.
Her son was gone.
Angela had bruises on her wrists but no serious injuries.
She told police Marcus had moved the boy thirty minutes earlier.
"He kept saying Dominic would choose the company over a stranger's kid," she said through tears.
Dominic closed his eyes.
Marcus still thought like Lorenzo had taught them.
Family first. Everyone else expendable.
Then Angela said something else.
"He has another child. A college girl."
Nathan broke down.
His daughter was alive.
For now.
Detective Chen asked Angela where Marcus went.
Angela shook her head.
"He kept talking about finishing where it started."
Dominic knew before anyone else did.
Lower Wacker.
The place where Marcus had first tried to take him out.
Then Dominic's estate lights went dark.
Vincent looked at the security board.
Every external camera failed at once.
A car engine roared near the front gate.
Clare screamed from the hall.
