Chapter 19 - Eleven Minutes

Dominic called the archive manager while Detective Chen dispatched fire crews and officers.
The Vale Central Archive occupied three floors of an old warehouse south of the river.
It contained decades of financial records, board minutes, legal files, and the original Black Harbor contracts.
If Marcus destroyed it, prosecutors would still have evidence.
But families connected to his schemes might never know the full truth.
At 11:39, the manager reported smoke in the electrical room.
At 11:41, sprinklers failed.
At 11:43, firefighters entered.
The sabotage had already begun before Marcus was arrested.
Dominic watched from the command van as smoke rolled from a second-floor window.
"Can they save it?" he asked.
Chen nodded toward firefighters carrying waterproof evidence bins through the loading dock.
"Some of it."
Then Clare arrived with a document box.
"You shouldn't be here," Dominic said.
"Neither should you."
She set the box down.
Black Harbor invoices.
Arthur's approvals.
Marcus's coded account references.
Enough to reconstruct what fire might erase.
Dominic looked at her.
"Caleb saved it twice."
Clare nodded. "He always made copies."
A firefighter emerged carrying a scorched metal case.
Inside were the original corporate seals and old board ledgers.
The archive survived.
So did the evidence.
By dawn, Marcus faced charges connected to kidnapping, conspiracy, financial crimes, and the death of Caleb Rowan. Arthur and Elaine Voss were charged for their roles in the medical manipulation and financial scheme. Mercer cooperated and surrendered his license pending investigation. Kevin and Angela entered protective arrangements as witnesses.
Dominic should have felt victorious.
Instead he sat alone in the estate great room, staring at the marble floor where Ellie had first touched his brace.
The board vote papers still waited on the conference table.
He picked them up.
Then tore them in half.
Behind him, a cane tapped once.
Not his.
Ellie stood there holding it with both hands.
"You don't need this forever," she said.
Dominic laughed for the first time in weeks.
May you like
Then Clare handed him one final envelope recovered from the archive.
It was addressed to him by Caleb Rowan.
