Chapter 17 - THE COTTAGE BURNS

Natalie ran toward the fire.
Dominic caught her.
"Noah is safe."
"Mom's letters are in there!"
"Copies exist."
"It was her house!"
That was different.
Firefighters arrived within minutes.
The east cottage could not be saved.
Natalie stood in the rain watching the roof collapse.
Brooke watched too, handcuffed beside a federal vehicle.
For the first time, her face held no polish.
Only horror.
"I didn't know he planted explosives."
"Do you want me to feel sorry for you?"
"No."
Good answer.
Malcolm was arrested on conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, and homicide-related charges in Owen's death.
Preston faced the same network plus trust forgery and obstruction.
Brooke was charged with conspiracy, attempted poisoning, coercion, fraud, and child endangerment.
Her cooperation might reduce her sentence.
It would not erase what she did.
Finch gave prosecutors access to the original trust system.
The waterfront sale was canceled.
Natalie's eleven-percent share block remained protected.
The land options stayed inside the Catherine Foundation and employee pension structure.
Then Sarah asked Natalie a practical question.
"Do you want the cottage rebuilt?"
Dominic started to answer, then stopped himself.
Natalie noticed.
"Thank you."
She thought for a long time.
"No."
"Mom protected the house so I'd always have somewhere to go."
Natalie wiped rain from her face.
"I don't want my whole life organized around needing somewhere to run."
She wanted the trust to rebuild a smaller home nearby and convert the cottage land into a garden and memorial for Catherine and Owen.
Noah wanted a treehouse.
Then Finch gave Dominic one final item recovered from Catherine's original files.
A sealed instruction addressed to him.
My son,
If you are reading this because the trust failed, understand this clearly:
The trust did not fail.
The people around it did.

Then Catherine's next line cut deeper.
Including you, if you signed what you did not read.
