Chapter 18 - WHAT DOMINIC SIGNED

Dominic read every document he had signed for ten years.

Not summaries.

Not highlighted tabs.

Every page.

He found no evidence he knowingly joined Preston's theft.

He found something almost as uncomfortable.

He had made the theft easier.

He signed routine trust distributions without review.

Renewed Vaughn's authority over Catherine's care.

Approved security budgets that hid Malcolm's access.

Allowed Preston to consolidate family documents because it was convenient.

Dominic had built a life where fear made people efficient around him.

Efficient people stopped asking him questions.

He had liked that.

Until silence nearly cost Natalie her son, her home, and her husband's truth.

The federal investigation also examined Dominic's businesses.

Some were clean.

Some were not.

Two trucking subsidiaries had used intimidation through contractors.

Dominic claimed he never ordered it.

The prosecutor answered, "You benefited from it."

He shut the contracts down.

Paid settlements.

Removed three managers.

No speech about becoming a good man.

Just consequences.

Emma received back pay for every fake deduction Brooke had taken from household staff.

Then she received something else.

A written apology from Dominic.

Not for Brooke's behavior.

For the system that let Brooke assume a maid would never be believed.

"This is awkward."

"Probably."

"You don't have to fire everyone who ever looked at me wrong."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"I'm learning."

Natalie moved into a rented house near Noah's school while her new home was built.

Not Dominic's mansion.

Her choice.

Noah visited Dominic on Sundays.

Sometimes.

Not because family demanded it.

Because he wanted to.

Then Brooke asked to see Natalie before entering a plea.

Natalie nearly refused.

Finally she agreed to ten minutes through glass.

"I loved Dominic."

"At least part of me did."

"You loved what being chosen by him made you feel."

"Maybe."

Then she said the one thing Natalie had not expected.

"Your husband saved my life once."

May you like

"What?"

"The night before he died."
