Chapter 17 - THE ROOM WITH NO CAMERA

The former employee’s name was Teresa Webb.

She had managed household systems during Carlo’s final years.

“The yellow room was built as a private dressing room for Sofia,” Teresa explained.

“No cameras. No microphones. No smart speakers.”

Bianca chose it because she thought nothing inside could be recorded.

But Teresa had added one feature years ago.

An old-fashioned intercom line to the linen room.

Forgotten.

Still wired.

Dominic checked.

The linen-room receiver had a digital maintenance recorder attached after a renovation.

It had captured everything.

Bianca threatening Elena.

Elena saying Matteo could be in danger.

Bianca mentioning Mia.

And one line no one remembered hearing clearly through the door.

Bianca said:

“Vittorio promised the maid would be gone before the vows.”

Not fired.

Gone.

Police confronted Bianca with the recording.

She admitted Vittorio planned to frame Elena for stealing jewelry and confidential documents.

A criminal complaint would remove her from the estate and destroy her credibility.

That was why the diamond bracelet had been involved.

Elena had not merely walked in on a conversation.

Bianca had already begun setting her up.

Mia’s arrival ruined it.

Then Matteo’s early return destroyed it.

The white roses had been scheduled as part of Bianca’s wedding image plan.

But Matteo had picked them up himself.

Three hours early.

One small change in timing cracked the whole conspiracy open.

Bianca accepted a plea agreement requiring full cooperation.

Vittorio refused.

His case moved toward trial.

Paul testified.

Former employees testified.

Financial auditors traced Arclight.

Then forensic experts revisited Marco’s crash.

The brake line failure had not been random.

It had been deliberately weakened.

Paul finally stopped using the word “warning.”

Under oath, he admitted Vittorio told him:

“Make him scared enough to stop digging.”

Marco died instead.

Elena sat in the back of the courtroom holding Mia’s hand.

Matteo sat several rows away.

No cameras were allowed near the child.

When the hearing ended, Mia ran to Elena.

“Is Daddy Marco brave?”

Elena knelt.

“Yes.”

Mia thought.

“Were you brave too?”

Elena began crying.

Before she could answer, Matteo said from behind them:

“Yes.”
