Chapter 11 - The Foundation's Missing Money

The red folder held more than a routine audit. Grace had saved a digital index, and an independent accountant found Northline Display Services payments that matched no legitimate work.
Northline was registered to an out-of-state mailbox and managed by a former employee of Adrian's investment firm. Over eighteen months, the foundation paid it for staging and consulting that could not be verified. Some funds moved into a company tied to Adrian's development project.
The tower was a distraction so Adrian could remove the folder before Julian presented the audit concerns.
"He needed the room to panic," Grace said. "He needed security focused on the terrace and everyone else looking for injuries. Then he could walk into the private office and take the folder."
Julian read the ledger twice. He had signed several of the foundation's budget approvals, trusting Adrian to manage the details. He had not asked enough questions, and the money had been routed through paperwork designed to look ordinary.
"I should have caught it," he said.
Caroline corrected him. "You should have had controls that made it harder to hide. That is different from choosing to steal. Your responsibility is to fix the system and cooperate."
Julian froze Northline payments, notified the board, and agreed to reimburse losses the foundation could not recover. He would not hide the fraud to protect the Vance name.
When Adrian learned the payments had been frozen, he called Julian and demanded a private meeting.
"You are letting a housekeeper and a contractor ruin this family," he said.
"No. I'm letting the evidence tell me what happened."
"You don't understand the pressure I was under. The development deal was supposed to save the foundation. I borrowed against expected returns. When the deal failed, I moved money to cover the gap. I was going to replace it."
"And the tower?"
Adrian said nothing.
"Did you press the pedal? Did you know Noah was there?"
"I never meant for him to get hurt."
It was not a denial. Julian closed his eyes for a second.

"You knew he was there," he said.
Adrian ended the call.
