Chapter 14 - The Backup That Survived

The investigators recovered a second camera file from a separate system used by the estate's insurance provider. It had been uploaded automatically before the override and had never been connected to the main security network. The image was clearer than the first recording.

At 7:41 p.m., Adrian entered the terrace, glanced toward the dining room, removed the silver cover, and pressed the release pedal with his shoe. Noah was rolling his car less than six feet away.

He stepped away as the tower began to sway.

The recording showed Elena noticing the movement. She ran, grabbed Noah, and shielded him behind the stone bench. Adrian did not move to help. He turned toward the house and walked quickly through the French doors.

A hallway camera also showed Adrian enter Julian's office during the gap and leave with a slim red object under his jacket.

The investigator called Julian and asked him to identify the man. He did not need to look twice.

"That's my brother," he said.

The prosecutor added sabotage and reckless-endangerment charges. Adrian was arrested the next morning, then released under strict conditions barring him from the estate, foundation offices, and contact with Noah.

When Julian told Noah that the police had seen the video, he kept the explanation simple.

"They found a recording that shows Uncle Adrian touching the tower. The grown-ups are taking care of it now."

Noah watched his face. "Do I have to tell them again?"

"No. You told the truth already. If they need to ask you anything, Maya and I will make sure it happens in a way that feels safe."

Noah nodded, then asked whether Elena would come back to work.

Julian looked toward the hall. Elena had been invited to the house, but she had not yet accepted the invitation.

"I hope so," he said. "But that's her choice."

That afternoon, an official letter cleared Elena and confirmed that the investigation supported her account, while noting that the estate's safety failures were still under review.

She read it twice, then placed it in a drawer beside the note she had written the night of the collapse.

For the first time since the gala, she could breathe without waiting for someone to blame her.
