Chapter 18 - An Apology Without a Demand

Adrian's request for a meeting was denied for the time being. The family court and criminal conditions barred direct contact, and Noah's therapist advised against an apology that might pressure the child to comfort the person who had endangered him.
Julian wrote to his brother through the attorneys. He told Adrian that any future apology would have to accept responsibility without asking Noah for forgiveness, and that the boy would decide whether he ever wanted to hear it.
Adrian's reply was short. He said he had made a terrible mistake, that he had never intended to hurt Noah, and that the tower had been meant to create a distraction, not a tragedy.
Julian read the message to Maya. She shook her head.
"He still describes the plan as if the only problem was that it went wrong. He doesn't say he should never have done it."
"Maybe he'll get there," Julian said.
"Maybe. But Noah doesn't have to wait for him to become a better person."
The court sentenced Adrian to prison for sabotage and fraud and ordered restitution. The board did not reinstate him, and Northline's remaining assets were frozen during recovery proceedings.
Julian covered immediate gaps in the children's program and publicly disclosed the vendors under review. Some donors left; others stayed because he began showing them records instead of asking for blind trust.
Elena signed her new contract and brought in an independent safety consultant. Her new policy required final checks on tall displays and two authorized signatures for any safety-lock override.
The first time a junior server stopped an event because a temporary railing felt loose, a manager complained about the delay. Elena thanked the server in front of the team and had the railing repaired before the guests arrived.
Later that evening, Noah came to her office with his wooden car. He rolled it along the edge of her desk and asked whether she would be at the next family dinner.
"If your dad invites me," Elena said.
Noah frowned. "I'll tell him he has to."
She smiled. "You can ask him. You don't have to make him do anything."
May you like
He thought about that, then nodded and ran back to Maya.
A few minutes later, Julian appeared in the doorway with a dinner invitation in his hand.
