Chapter 11 - THE EMPTY SIDEWALK

The marshals moved Gloria again before dawn. She tried to argue because she had left her sewing tin behind, but Elena promised to retrieve it herself.

I looked out through the curtained window. Ordinary people were walking dogs, opening stores, buying coffee. I hated how violence had turned their ordinary morning into something I envied.

Camille called from a secure phone.

“My supervisor says I can take leave,” she said. “But I don’t want to vanish.”

“You’re entitled to be frightened.”

“Are you?”

I almost laughed.

“Yes. Very.”

She told me she had grown up believing that if something wrong happened, an adult in authority would stop it. Watching two uniformed men attack a judge had destroyed that comfort.

“Then I saw you look at me through the door,” she said. “You were scared too. You still tried to help me.”

“You helped me first.”

A long pause followed.

“Can they use my video?”

“That decision belongs to the prosecutors and the court, but preserving the original gave them a chance.”

By afternoon, federal investigators had recovered the torn halves of my credential and the broken clippers. Both bore traces of the officers’ handling. The footage already established far more than the officers would ever admit.

Then a reporter published a thirty-second clip from an anonymous source. It showed me on the floor shouting for help, but cut away before the assault became clear. The caption suggested I had attacked security staff.

Within an hour, strangers were calling me a fraud.

Elena walked in carrying a printout.

“The upload came from an account connected to the courthouse,” she said.

The registered user was a clerk who had worked beside Tessa for fourteen years.
