Chapter 19 - THE VERDICT

The verdict did not arrive in a single dramatic afternoon.
Pruitt’s cooperation was followed by further hearings, challenges, and a trial that stretched across several weeks. Baxter accepted responsibility for falsifying electronic records. Pike continued to deny ordering violence, even after the phone evidence was admitted.
The jury found Voss guilty of assaulting and threatening me and of obstructing a federal proceeding. Pike was convicted on conspiracy and obstruction counts tied to the scheme. Baxter pleaded guilty to his role in altering the docket records. Pruitt faced sentencing under his own guilty plea.
Their sentences would be decided by the courts, not by me. I was grateful for that. The temptation to confuse justice with revenge can be strongest when you have been wronged.
Isaiah’s case proceeded under Judge Ames. The restored video was examined there too, and the court allowed jurors to hear evidence the officers had tried to bury. Years of legal consequences lay ahead for everyone involved.
When the guilty verdicts were read in my case, Voss stared at the table. He never looked at me. I had imagined feeling something enormous in that moment, a door opening or a weight lifting.
Instead, I felt tired.
Gloria squeezed my hand.
“You stayed,” she whispered.
“We all did.”
Camille stood behind us, tears on her cheeks. She had graduated law school and accepted a position serving people who could not afford counsel. I wanted to tell her she had already done more good than many people did in a lifetime.
On the courthouse steps, reporters called my name. I made only one statement.
“The law must protect people even when the person accused of violating it wears a badge.”
Then I walked away without answering another question.
That evening, Tessa left a sealed envelope at my home. It was from the chief judge, and it contained the date of my return to court.
I held it for a long time before opening it.
Because I still did not know whether I could walk through those doors again.
