Chapter 14 - SHANE PRUITT’S CALL

For three days, nobody told me whose fingerprint had been found. That was how the process was supposed to work. I hated it anyway.
I filled the time with physical therapy, headaches, and short, exhausting attempts to sit through a book. A doctor had shaved the damaged sections of my scalp evenly so the skin could heal. When I first saw myself afterward, I nearly turned from the mirror.
Gloria stood behind me.
“There she is,” she said.
“Who?”
“My daughter. The hair was never the part that made you her.”
That night Elena called. Shane Pruitt had contacted a federal attorney through his lawyer. He wanted to discuss cooperation.
“He says Voss was promised that the hearing would never start,” she told me. “And he says Pike arranged it.”
“Why would he tell the truth now?”
“Maybe he’s afraid. Maybe he thinks it’ll save him. We’ll corroborate it.”
Pruitt’s first account contained an astonishing detail. The men had been told not to kill me. They were supposed to provoke an incident severe enough to remove me from the case, then make it appear that I had attacked them.
The clippers had been Voss’s idea.
The humiliation, Pruitt claimed, would make me too ashamed to be seen in court.
I sat very still as Elena spoke.
“They thought you would hide,” she said.
“Then they never knew my mother.”
But Pruitt’s lawyer withdrew the offer the next morning.
Leah later told me investigators had discovered an anonymous photograph taped to Pruitt’s front door. It showed his little daughter leaving school.
On the back were five words:
YOU KNOW WHAT SILENCE COSTS.
