Chapter 13 - The Wrong Order

The woman at the courthouse counter introduced herself as Celia Reed, a consultant for the Whitmore family. She carried an overnight bag, a packet of medical forms, and a stamped order that looked official until the clerk checked its case number.

“No judge signed this,” the clerk said.

Celia tried to snatch it back. A deputy asked her to stay.

Ortiz arrived twenty minutes later. Inside the packet was a booking for a private flight to Reno under Sophie's name, scheduled for the following morning. Attached was a letter describing the child as “unable to remain safely with her father.”

Emily sat very still when Tessa told her. “They were going to take her away?”

“They were trying to create paperwork that would make it look authorized. The court caught it.”

Daniel rushed home. Sophie was playing in the sunroom with a court-approved caregiver and a caseworker. He sat beside her, grateful for every ordinary sound: the rattle of plastic blocks, the dog drinking from its bowl, the hum of the refrigerator.

“Where's Grandma?” she asked.

“She's staying somewhere else for now.”

“Is she mad at me?”

“No. You didn't do anything wrong.”

He called Aunt Helen, his mother's younger sister. Helen had kept her distance from the family for years, something Patricia always blamed on jealousy.

“Tell me the truth about her debts,” Daniel said.

Helen was silent. Then she spoke so quietly he nearly missed it. “There was a resort project. She borrowed against foundation property to keep it alive. Leah found out.”

“How much?”

“More than she could repay. And she said Sophie was her way out.”

Daniel pressed a hand over his eyes. “You knew?”

“I heard a threat and told myself she couldn't mean it. I was wrong.”

The call ended with Helen promising to testify. Within minutes, Daniel received a message from an unknown number. It contained a photograph of Sophie taken through the sunroom window that afternoon.

Underneath were six words: YOUR MOTHER STILL HAS PEOPLE INSIDE.
