Chapter 19 - The Truth She Couldn't Buy

The criminal proceedings took months. Patricia ultimately pleaded guilty to charges involving child endangerment, evidence tampering, and fraud. The court ordered restitution and prison time. Marcus answered separately for the forged papers and financial scheme.

At sentencing, Patricia stood beside her attorney, silver hair pinned perfectly in place.

“I was under pressure,” she told the judge. “Everything I built was falling apart.”

The judge listened, then asked, “Did the child at the top of the driveway cause your financial problems?”

“No.”

“Did the woman who ran to save her cause them?”

“No.”

“Then stop speaking as though they owed you the price of your mistakes.”

Daniel sat beside Helen in the public gallery. He felt relief and grief together. The mother who raised him had nearly killed his daughter.

Afterward, he met Emily through their lawyers to finalize her civil agreement. It covered medical care and lost wages, acknowledged his assault plainly, and required staff training and an independent reporting process at the estate. Daniel had requested those provisions himself, but Emily reviewed every line.

“I'm not asking you to forgive me,” he told her.

“Good,” she said. “Because I'm not ready.”

“I understand.”

“And don't turn that into another way of making yourself the hero.”

He almost smiled, then stopped. “I won't.”

Three months later, the trust accounts were restored under Katherine's independent oversight. The stolen funds would take longer to recover. Daniel sold the hillside mansion. He couldn't bear the sound of wheels on its driveway.

When Sophie saw the moving boxes, she asked where the bad hill was going.

“It isn't coming with us,” Daniel answered.

She thought for a moment, then said, “Can Emily know our new address?”

Daniel looked at the packed box containing her pink stroller. He had not had the heart to throw it away.

That night, Emily sent a message through Tessa: THERE'S SOMETHING SOPHIE LEFT WITH ME. I THINK SHE SHOULD HAVE IT BACK.
