Chapter 18 - No More Family Exceptions

Patricia was arrested after prosecutors filed charges connected to the stroller incident, the video deletion, and the forged documents. The indictment was not a verdict, and the family lawyer reminded Daniel of that. Daniel did not need a verdict to know what he had seen.
His own assault case moved forward separately. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge, accepted probation, counseling, and a no-contact condition except through Emily's lawyer. A court-approved family safety plan allowed him to continue caring for Sophie under review.
Daniel stopped reading online comments when Sophie asked why his phone made him sad.
Emily met with Tessa about restitution and her future. The medical bills from her injured shoulder had been covered. Emily insisted the settlement clear her name and protect household employees.
“I don't want a public speech about how wonderful I am,” she said. “I want the next worker to be believed when she reports danger.”
Tessa smiled. “That's a stronger demand than most people realize.”
At the mansion, employees were interviewed about years of threats and withheld wages. Some admitted they had stayed silent because Patricia made them afraid of losing health insurance. A former cook brought records of the dates she had seen Sophie left alone with her grandmother despite staff warnings.
Owen resigned after giving evidence. “I should have reported the camera access request,” he told Daniel.
“So should I,” Daniel answered. “I was the one who signed it.”
Just before trial, Patricia's defense offered a plea proposal. Prosecutors would consider it, but only if she admitted the central acts and the fraud could be accounted for.
Daniel received a letter from his mother that evening.
On the first page she wrote, I only did what was necessary to save this family.

On the second she wrote, If you testify against me, Sophie will never forgive you.
He set the letter down and reached for the phone to call Sophie's therapist.
