Chapter 16 - The Person Who Said No

Emily testified at the next evidentiary hearing. She wore a plain navy dress and brought no notes to the witness stand. Patricia sat opposite her, perfectly groomed, looking at the floor.
“Tell the court what you saw,” Tessa said.
“I saw the stroller moving faster than I could run,” Emily answered. “I knew Sophie was inside. I didn't stop to think about my job.”
“Did you push the stroller?”
“No.”
“Did you ever ask Sophie to accuse her grandmother?”
“No. I asked if she could breathe. That's all.”
Patricia's attorney asked whether Emily had personal feelings for Daniel, implying she'd invented the incident to separate him from his mother.
Emily looked directly at the judge. “I don't need to be in love with someone's father to keep his child from getting hurt.”
The room went quiet. Daniel, seated at the back, stared at his hands.
Ortiz introduced the recovered footage and supporting camera logs. Owen described the backup recorder. Leon testified that his contractor's truck had captured Emily running toward the stroller. A forensic specialist explained that the child's interview had been conducted without leading questions.
Then Katherine Bell described the six-million-dollar withdrawal request and Patricia's false claim of successor authority. The judge continued the protective restrictions and referred the suspected fraud to prosecutors.
Charges and trust disputes would take longer, but Patricia's public story had begun to collapse.
Outside the courtroom, Daniel waited for Emily at a respectful distance.
“You were brave,” he said.
“I was telling the truth.”
“I know.”
She looked at the bruise fading on her cheek. “I want you to remember who you believed when it mattered.”
He nodded. Before she walked away, Ortiz approached with one more update.
“Celia Reed has agreed to cooperate,” she said. “And she's identified the person who ordered the fake transfer.”

It wasn't Patricia.
It was Daniel's own estate manager, Marcus Venn.
