Chapter 15 - WHAT MAISIE TOLD THE COUNSELOR
The counselor's name was Beth Nolan.
She had been out sick for two days.
When investigators reached her, she sounded horrified.
"Maisie came to me Monday morning," Nolan said. "She told me Ms. Kendrick put kids in the closet. She said she was scared she'd be next."
"What did you do?" Leah asked.
"I wrote a safeguarding note and emailed Principal Bell asking for an immediate meeting."
Bell said he never received it.
IT logs proved he opened it twelve minutes after it was sent.
Worse, he forwarded it to Kendrick.
Leah stood outside the district office when she learned that.
She had been angry before.
Now she was shaking.
"He sent my daughter's disclosure to the person she was afraid of."
Dr. Shah nodded.
"Yes."
"Then the next day Kendrick made her cut her hair."
"Yes."
Leah turned away because she could not trust herself to speak.
Rafael stood a few feet back.
After a moment, Leah looked at him.
"Thirty-seven seconds."
He nodded.
"I know."
"I hated you for those thirty-seven seconds when I first heard."
"I hated me too."
Leah wiped her eyes.
"But if you had opened that door immediately, she'd have said Maisie did it herself."
Rafael said nothing.
"You gave my daughter proof."
"I wish she hadn't needed it."
That afternoon, Sofia's newspaper published the first story.
No video of Maisie appeared. No image of her face. The article described the allegations, the complaints, the district records, and the existence of evidence turned over to police.
By dinner, parents were gathering outside the school.
By sunset, three more families contacted investigators.
By nine, Kendrick had been placed on unpaid leave, Bell had been removed from the building, and Reece had announced a temporary leave "for the good of the district."
Then Sofia received an email from an address she did not recognize.
Attached was a photograph.
It showed Rafael through the classroom window, phone raised, recording Maisie.
