Chapter 2 - THE STORY SHE TOLD

Kendrick moved faster than Rafael expected.
She stepped between him and Maisie and pointed toward the hall.
"Get out of my classroom."
"Maisie is coming with me."
"You are a custodian. You do not remove students from classrooms."
Maisie bent to pick up her backpack.
Kendrick snapped, "Sit down."
The child flinched so hard Rafael felt it in his chest.
"She's coming with me," he repeated.
The hallway filled within minutes. Assistant Principal Dana Mills arrived first, then Principal Bell, then the school nurse. Kendrick began speaking before anyone asked a question.
"Maisie had a behavioral episode," she said. "She found scissors in the art bin and started cutting her own hair. I was trying to de-escalate her when Mr. Ortiz barged in and began filming a minor."
Maisie stared at her shoes.
Rafael said, "That's not what happened."
Bell's eyes went straight to the phone in Rafael's hand.
"Did you record inside a classroom?"
"I recorded what I saw."
"Give me the phone."
"No."
Bell lowered his voice. "Rafael, don't turn this into something bigger."
"It already is."
The nurse took Maisie toward the health office. As she passed, Rafael crouched slightly.
"Your mom is coming, okay?"
Maisie looked at him for the first time.
"She'll believe Ms. Kendrick."
"Why would you say that?"
Maisie's lower lip trembled.
"Because Ms. Kendrick already called her."
Rafael straightened.
Bell and Mills exchanged a look.
Five minutes later, Rafael was told to wait in the maintenance office. His key ring was taken. His radio was taken. He was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into "unauthorized recording and disruption of instruction."
Then Bell held out his hand again.
"The phone, Rafael."
Rafael slipped it into his pocket.
"It's my personal property."
Bell's smile vanished.
"Then understand something. If that video leaves this building, the district may treat it as a student privacy violation."
Rafael said nothing.
May you like
Because forty seconds earlier, while everyone was arguing, his phone had finished uploading the video to the family cloud account he shared with his daughter.
And Rafael's daughter was a reporter.
