Chapter 19 - WHY MAISIE?
The answer was buried in an email from fourteen months earlier.
Leah had treated Kendrick's sister at the urgent care clinic after a minor car accident. The sister demanded prescription pain medication the physician refused to authorize. Leah documented the interaction after the woman threatened staff.
Nothing came of it.
Leah barely remembered the incident.
Kendrick had not forgotten.
On her laptop was a message to a friend:
Funny. The nurse who humiliated my sister has a kid entering my grade next year.
Another draft, never sent, read:
Maybe Mom learns humility when the child does.
Leah had to sit down.
"This was revenge?"
Cole said, "That's what the evidence suggests."
The discovery changed the case again. Kendrick had not merely used an abusive system. She had targeted a child for a private grudge, then used the school's hidden discipline culture to disguise it.
Leah cried that night after Maisie went to sleep. Parents do not always grieve logically.
"She hurt my daughter because of me."
Rafael, sitting across from her kitchen table, shook his head.
"She hurt your daughter because of herself. Don't carry her choices."
Leah looked at him.
"You sound like you've said that before."
He smiled sadly.
"My daughter Sofia spent years thinking my long shifts meant she wasn't important. I spent years thinking working harder would explain love. Families are good at carrying the wrong guilt."
Maisie appeared in the hallway in pajamas.
"Mom?"
Leah wiped her face.
"Hey. Couldn't sleep?"
Maisie walked in and climbed into her lap.
Her hair had begun growing out. Still uneven. Still hers.
"Is Ms. Kendrick coming back?"
"No."
"Ever?"
"Not to your school."
Maisie leaned against her.
Then she asked, "Is Mr. Ortiz coming back?"
Rafael smiled.
"Monday."
Maisie nodded as if that fixed something important.
But on Monday morning, when Rafael arrived, his key card did not work.
May you like
Not because he was suspended.
Because the district had changed his job title overnight.
