Chapter 5 - THE RESET ROOM

The next morning, Bell sent an email to all staff.

It said there had been "an unfortunate student incident" fueled by misinformation. It reminded employees not to speak with parents, media, or each other about confidential matters.

Rafael read it twice.

Then he laughed once, without humor.

"Too late."

Sofia did not publish the video. A crying child was not content; this was evidence. Instead, she made calls.

By noon, she found Landon Price's father.

His name was Marcus.

He agreed to meet Rafael and Leah at a coffee shop across town.

Marcus brought a folder.

Inside were emails, attendance records, and a photograph of a narrow storage closet with no window.

"My son called it the dark room," Marcus said. "The school called it a supervised calming space."

"Was he locked in?" Leah asked.

Marcus nodded. "He says Kendrick stood outside. The school denied it. When I asked for footage, Bell said the camera was down for maintenance."

Rafael knew that door. He had repaired its handle last winter.

"That room is not approved for students."

Marcus leaned forward. "I filed a district complaint. Two weeks later, Landon was accused of threatening another kid. They pushed for an alternative placement. I transferred him before they could put that in his permanent file."

Leah whispered, "They made him leave."

"They made us feel lucky to escape."

Rafael asked, "Do you still have the complaint number?"

Marcus slid a page across the table.

At the bottom was a handwritten note from Principal Bell.

Resolved internally. No further action recommended.

Sofia photographed it.

Then Rafael's phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

You should have handed over the phone.

A second message appeared.

Check your garage before you go home.

Rafael stood so fast his chair fell backward.

Because his wife was home alone.
