Chapter 18 - BEFORE THE WINDOW

The audio was ugly because it began so calmly.
"You told Ms. Nolan something that wasn't true."
Maisie answered, "It was true."
"No. You misunderstood a classroom strategy."
"Landon cried in there."
"Landon had behavior problems."
A pause.
Then Kendrick said, "You're going to tell the counselor you exaggerated."
"No."
"Excuse me?"
"No."
Another pause.
A drawer opened.
Metal clicked.
Kendrick's voice changed.
"You want to act grown? Then learn what happens when you make a mess you can't take back."
Maisie began crying.
"Please don't."
"Cut the braid."
The gym went dead silent.
The recording continued through every minute Rafael had not witnessed.
It captured the first cut.
The second.
Kendrick ordering Maisie to keep going.
And then, finally, Rafael's voice from the doorway.
That's enough.
Nobody argued about context after that.
The board voted that night to terminate Kendrick and Bell. Reece was placed on immediate suspension pending removal proceedings and criminal review. State investigators opened inquiries into false records, evidence tampering, and child endangerment allegations.
Rafael's suspension was rescinded. He accepted back pay but declined a public apology ceremony.
"I clean floors," he told Sofia. "I don't need a stage."
But the story was not finished.
Two weeks later, Detective Cole called Leah.
"We recovered Kendrick's personal laptop."
"Okay."
"There are files on it about Maisie."
Leah gripped the phone.
"What kind of files?"
"Draft letters. Discipline plans. Notes."
Cole paused.
"Some were created before Maisie ever entered her class."
Leah felt the room tilt.
May you like
Kendrick had not simply lost control one afternoon.
She had chosen Maisie in advance.
