Chapter 13 - THE RED LIGHT

April met Hart and her attorney at the police station. I waited in the lobby because she had a right to tell her story without me filling in the blanks.

When she came out, she looked about twenty-five and at least ten years older from worry.

“I should've spoken up the night Ben collapsed,” she said.

“You're speaking now.”

“I heard the first distress call at eight fifty-two. Heller told me to wait for authorization before entering the building. When I reached Ben, the others were standing around him like they were afraid to touch him.”

Hart showed me April's statement later, with her permission. It explained the timeline, the missing addendum, and a detail that made the hair rise on my arms.

After the courtyard assault, Mercer had called an academy technician to disable camera recording. April knew because the technician had come to the medical office afterward, trembling, asking for something to settle his stomach.

“Why keep filming until after the threat?” I asked.

“He wasn't fast enough,” Hart said. “The backup may be gone, but the recorder transmitted short event clips to a security vendor.”

A preservation request had reached the vendor in time. Hart wouldn't tell me what it contained yet.

Outside, April stopped by my car. “When Ben was on the floor, I tried to get through the door. Ryan wouldn't move. He kept saying it was just a drill.”

“Did he understand Ben was sick?”

“I don't know what he understood. I know what he saw.”

We sat with that difference for a while.

My phone rang. It was Rosa, speaking so softly I could barely hear.

“Emma, come now.”

My heart dropped. “What's happened?”

“Ben opened his eyes. He said three words, and then he started crying.”

I held my breath.

“He said, ‘Ryan locked it.’”
