Chapter 14 - BEN'S VOICE

Ben couldn't tell the entire story at once. His throat hurt, and the doctors wanted him rested. I was happy to follow their lead. Survival isn't a performance for people waiting outside the door.
Rosa sat beside him, smoothing his hair. He looked at me for a long time before recognizing my face from an old photograph.
“Dad's friend?” he rasped.
“Unfortunately,” I said. “He talked about me like I was a pain in the neck.”
Ben's mouth twitched. “He said you were stubborn.”
“That part's true.”
I stayed only a few minutes. When he reached toward me, I took his hand and let him set the pace.
“I tried to get out,” he whispered.
“I believe you.”
“Ryan shut the door. Said we'd quit if he opened it.”
“Did Captain Heller hear?”
Ben nodded, then squeezed his eyes shut. “He told us to finish. I kept thinking if I passed, Mom wouldn't have to pay next year.”
Rosa leaned forward. “Baby, I don't care about tuition. I care about you.”
“I'm sorry,” Ben said.
She kissed his forehead. “You have nothing to apologize for.”
I walked into the hallway before he could see me cry. Isaac had died saving strangers. His son had nearly died trying not to disappoint adults who should have protected him.
Hart arrived later with a prosecutor-trained interviewer. The clinical team approved a short, careful conversation. Ben repeated what he'd told us without prompting. His words were recorded properly, not squeezed into somebody else's story.

As I left, a nurse slipped me a note from the hospital switchboard. Someone had called claiming to be Ben's father and demanding his room number.
Isaac Ortega had been buried for twelve years.
