Chapter 16 - THE CLIP THEY COULDN'T EDIT

Hart wouldn't play evidence at a public board meeting, and neither would I. Charles tried to demand an immediate screening. The detective told him to speak to the prosecutor.

By the following week, investigators had authenticated a short courtyard recording recovered from the security vendor. It showed Ryan approaching me, placing the orange-tipped pistol against my temple, and keeping it there after I ordered him to lower it. It also showed me separating him from the pistol without striking him.

The recording ended when Mercer's remote shutdown command took effect.

The unedited clip wasn't an argument. It was the missing beginning.

Hart showed it to Ryan and his attorney in a formal interview. I wasn't there, but she later told me Ryan had stopped calling the incident a joke.

A few hours later the academy issued a new statement acknowledging “serious misconduct” in the courtyard. Mercer was placed on leave. The hospital reinstated my teaching appointments.

But none of that told us what happened behind the door at Iron Gate.

Owen Bell called with a lead. Cole Tactical had promoted the training system using demonstration footage. An internal camera in the control room had recorded temperature warnings, staff conversations, and images from the drill floor. The company said the marketing archive had been wiped, but the vendor retained an off-site copy under its contract.

Hart and the prosecutor obtained the necessary legal process. Owen identified the archive by its project number; the vendor supplied files and audit logs.

I waited at Rosa's kitchen table while the investigators reviewed them. Rain tapped against the window. On the mantel stood Isaac's photograph, his crooked grin exactly as I remembered.

At 9:08 p.m., Hart called.

“We found Ben,” she said. “We found the alarm.”

“Then you know why no one helped him?”

There was a long silence.

“Emma,” she said, “you need to understand that Ryan wasn't the only person standing at that door.”
