Chapter 17 - THE MAN BEHIND THE DOOR

The investigator's summary described what the control-room video showed. Ben staggered near the exit. Tyler tried to move toward him. Ryan blocked the doorway and argued that they would be disqualified if they stopped.
Captain Heller watched on a monitor. An alarm flashed beside a warning that ventilation was inadequate. Instead of ending the exercise, he told the staff to keep the scenario running. The first emergency call came at 8:52. The door wasn't opened to the medical team until 9:16.
When Hart reached that point, I asked her to stop.
Twenty-four minutes hadn't been a typo. It had been twenty-four decisions to keep going.
Heller's attorney claimed the alarm had been misunderstood and that the delay resulted from confusion. The records would have to be tested in court. I knew better than to confuse a recorded warning with a conviction.
“Is Ben strong enough to hear what's happening?” Hart asked.
“Ask his doctors and his mother,” I said. “And let him choose.”
That evening Rosa invited me to dinner. She made Isaac's favorite chili, then apologized three times because she had burned the bottom. Ben, finally home for short supervised visits, sat at the table looking thin but determined.
“Mom told me they found the video,” he said.
“They found records that support what you said.”
He stared into his bowl. “I keep hearing Ryan tell me I was weak.”
“Needing help wasn't weakness.”
“I was scared.”
“So was everybody. The difference is you asked for help. The adults ignored you.”
Someone knocked. Rosa froze. Through the glass in the front door I saw a person in an academy jacket.

It was Drew. He held a plastic bag with Ben's name written on it.
“I found his camera,” he said. “Ryan's been trying to get it back.”
