Chapter 10 - FORTY-EIGHT MINUTES

Emily drove while Daniel called the bank's fraud department.

"I did not authorize the transfer," he said for the fourth time.

The representative kept asking verification questions.

"Sir, the instruction came through a recognized corporate terminal with your biometric token."

"My biometric token is on my phone."

Alan glanced at him. "Did you give your father access during wedding planning?"

Daniel remembered signing a stack of documents in Victor's office two weeks earlier. Victor had said one was a temporary proxy so company decisions would not interrupt the honeymoon.

"Damn it."

Mara said, "He needed your marriage certificate and your proxy."

"To steal from me."

"To finish stealing from you."

They reached Voss Holdings at 4:31.

The lobby security gates rejected Daniel's badge.

The guard looked embarrassed. "Mr. Voss, your access was revoked twenty minutes ago."

Emily slapped her new marriage license on the desk. "Then call upstairs and tell Victor his daughter-in-law is here to ruin his afternoon."

A familiar woman stepped from the elevator before the guard could answer.

CFO Hannah Price.

"Daniel, come with me."

Upstairs, Hannah locked them in a conference room.

"Your father ordered me to approve a transfer from the Bell Trust this morning. I refused. Thirty minutes later, Leonard Hale produced your proxy."

"This explains the missing capital."

"Can you stop the transfer?"

"Maybe. We have a reversal window if the receiving bank hasn't settled it. But I need proof the authorization is fraudulent."

The videographer, who had followed them all the way from the church, lifted her camera.

"Would a recording of Victor admitting Daniel wouldn't recognize his own mother count?"

Hannah blinked. "Who are you?"

"Apparently the most useful wedding vendor in Arizona."

At 4:47, Hannah transmitted a fraud hold.

Then every monitor in the conference room went black.

Emergency lights clicked on.

Smoke alarms began screaming.

Black smoke was rising from the server floor below.

"He's burning the records."

Someone was locking the conference room from the outside.
