Chapter 19 - THE SISTER

The girl's name was Lily Bell.
Daniel stared at her so long that Emily finally touched his shoulder.
Mara looked nervous. "I was going to tell you after the wedding. I didn't expect everything to explode on the steps."
Daniel found his voice. "She's my sister?"
"Half-sister."
Lily shoved her hands into the pockets of an oversized hoodie. "Hi. This is weird."
"Yeah."
Mara explained that years after losing Daniel, she rebuilt enough of a life to marry again. Her second husband, Thomas Bell, died of cancer when Lily was nine.
"Why didn't you bring her today?" Daniel asked.
"Because if you rejected me, I didn't want her standing there watching it happen."
Lily looked at Mara. "I told her that was dramatic."
"It was also correct."
Something about her felt familiar even though they had never met.
"You knew about me?"
"My whole life. Mom kept a birthday candle for you every year. She'd light it after dinner."
Lily handed him a small box.
Inside was the blue stuffed rabbit, Captain.
"How..."
Mara smiled weakly. "You had two. I kept the backup."
He sat on the church steps and cried harder than he had since childhood.
Emily sat one step lower in her wedding dress.
For a few minutes, nobody tried to fix anything.
Months passed.
Victor was indicted on charges tied to fraud, conspiracy, witness intimidation, kidnapping, and the 2004 crash. Nate accepted a plea in exchange for testimony. Hale lost his license before his criminal case was even finished. Kessler agreed to testify and surrendered his medical license.
Alan received probation and community service after prosecutors credited his preserved evidence and cooperation. Emily did not forgive him quickly. Alan did not ask her to.
The Bell Trust recovered most of its assets through court orders and insurance claims.
Daniel resigned from day-to-day control of Voss Holdings and installed an independent board.
Then one morning, Mara received a letter from Daniel.
Meet me at 214 East Polk tomorrow at ten.
She arrived expecting another difficult conversation.
Instead, she found construction crews, architects, and Daniel standing beneath a new sign.
THE BELL FAMILY JUSTICE CENTER.
