Chapter 9 - THE MONEY UNDER HIS NAME
Daniel had never worried about money.
His checking accounts were frozen. His investment access was suspended. Even the corporate card in his wallet had been canceled.
"By whose authority?" Alan asked.
The bank manager hesitated. "Voss Holdings filed an emergency fraud notice."
Daniel laughed bitterly. "My father froze my money because I opened a box?"
Mara pulled a thick folder from the drawer. "It may not be your father's money."
At the top was a trust agreement created by Mara's father, Samuel Bell, shortly before his death. Daniel had been the sole beneficiary.
"Twenty-eight million dollars?"
"At the time," Mara said. "Plus shares."
Daniel shook his head. "My grandfather owned a machine shop."
"Your grandfather invented a valve used in industrial cooling systems. He sold the patent. Victor married me two years later."
All his life, Victor had told him the Voss fortune began with one brave investment and years of hard work.
"Your trust owned forty-one percent of the original company that became Voss Holdings."
Emily understood first. "Victor didn't build the empire. He built it with Daniel's trust."
"Can he legally do that?"
"Some of it," Alan said. "If he was trustee and investments benefited you. But if he moved assets into companies he personally controlled, that's self-dealing."
Page after page showed transfers from the trust into Voss entities, then loans to Victor, Hale, and a company Daniel did not recognize.
CALDER RISK SERVICES.
Then Emily found a newer page.
A transfer order was scheduled for that afternoon.
$14,600,000.
Destination: Mariner Private Bank, Cayman Islands.
Authorization: Daniel Michael Voss.
"I never signed this."
"The transfer executes at five."
"It's 4:12."
"Your marriage changed your control rights. At the moment you married, Victor's authority as trustee should have ended."
His father had planned to empty the trust on Daniel's wedding day before Daniel ever learned he owned it.
