Chapter 18 - THE FLIGHT THAT NEVER LEFT

Federal investigators reached the private airport before Daniel did.
The charter plane sat on the tarmac with its cabin door open.
A mechanic was already underneath the left wing.
Daniel watched from behind a security line as investigators photographed a fuel-system access panel.
"Mr. Voss, you and your wife were scheduled to fly on this aircraft at six tonight?"
"Yes."
"Who arranged it?"
"My father."
The agent nodded grimly. "Someone tampered with the fuel-pressure sensor. We can't yet say what would have happened in flight."
At the county jail, Nate asked to speak with prosecutors.
By afternoon, the story came out.
Victor had not ordered a plane crash - at least not in words. He had told Nate that Daniel was "becoming difficult" and that the company needed "protection from family instability." Nate claimed he sabotaged only the warning sensor to force an emergency landing and frighten Daniel into signing new control documents.
Nobody believed the distinction mattered much.
Nate also admitted he had cut Mara's brake line in 2004 after Victor told him to "make her afraid to drive away with the boy."
Victor denied everything.
And Alan Reed walked voluntarily into the prosecutor's office with every copy he had hidden for two decades.
Emily sat beside her father before he went in.
"Are you going to prison?" she asked.
Alan breathed out slowly. "Maybe."
"Are you scared?"
"Terrified."
Emily nodded. "Good. Tell the truth anyway."
For the first time all day, Daniel understood that Emily was losing a version of her father too.
That night, he and Emily returned to the church.
Workers had swept away most of the flower petals.
Her bouquet still sat in a bucket of water near the office.
"Worst wedding reception ever."
Emily laughed through tears. "We didn't even get cake."
"I don't know what comes next."
"Neither do I."
Then the church door opened.
Mara stood there holding the old photograph.
Behind her was a teenage girl Daniel had never seen before.
May you like
The girl had Mara's eyes.
And Daniel's crooked smile.
