Chapter 12 - THE FALSE DIAGNOSIS

The document looked official.

It had a doctor’s letterhead, clinical language, and a conclusion claiming Luciano suffered from prolonged grief disorder severe enough to impair judgment.

There was one problem.

Luciano had never met the doctor.

Rachel scrolled through the recovered emails.

Marcus had paid a consultant to build a file from social media posts, old photographs, and statements supplied by Bernadette.

Statements describing Luciano as unstable.

Volatile.

Absent.

Obsessed with work.

“Some of this is true,” Luciano said quietly.

Daniel looked at him. “Being grieving and overworked is not the same as being legally incompetent.”

Luciano kept reading.

Bernadette had written that he sometimes spoke to Elena’s photograph.

That he had missed family dinners.

That he slept badly.

That he had once broken a glass after receiving a hospital bill addressed to his dead wife.

Private moments only a mother would know, turned into evidence.

Theo sat asleep in the hospital bed nearby.

Luciano closed the laptop.

“I want her out of my son’s life.”

Daniel nodded. “We’ll seek a protective order.”

“I also want every company account frozen.”

Rachel said, “Already started.”

“And the house?”

“Legally Theo’s trust owns it.”

Luciano looked out the window.

“Then Bernadette leaves.”

Sofia watched him carefully. “You’re sure?”

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

Luciano continued, “I’m not sure about anything anymore. But I know what happens if I keep protecting adults from consequences. Theo pays for it.”

That afternoon, police arrested Bernadette for conspiracy related to the forged school documents and trust transfers. Her attorney arranged release pending a hearing.

As officers escorted her through the hospital lobby, she saw Luciano.

“Please,” she said.

He stopped.

“I made mistakes.”

“You made choices.”

“I was trying to save your brother.”

“You almost destroyed my son.”

Her eyes filled with tears. “Marcus said he would expose something about Elena.”

Luciano’s face changed.

“What?”

Bernadette looked toward the officers.

“He said if I stopped helping him, he would prove your wife’s accident wasn’t an accident.”

Luciano forgot how to breathe.
