Chapter 18 - THE LAST SECRET

Luciano did not ask Marcus what he meant.
He refused to give him that satisfaction.
Instead, he went back through Antonio’s files.
The answer was in Box 317.
He had simply missed it.
Inside the sealed envelope addressed to Theo was a second, smaller letter marked FOR LUCIANO AFTER THE LEGAL MATTERS ARE SAFE.
Daniel opened it with him.
Antonio had written only one page.
Son,
Your mother did something unforgivable, but not for the reason you may think.
Years ago, when Marcus first began stealing, she covered his debts using money from my personal account. When I confronted her, she promised it would stop. It did not.
I believe shame made her easier for Marcus to control. Every lie required another lie.
Do not confuse her weakness with innocence.
But do not confuse justice with cruelty either.
Protect Theo. Break the pattern.
Luciano sat quietly after reading it.
That was the secret.
It was not another hidden crime. It was a pattern.
Bernadette had spent years saving Marcus from consequences until he believed consequences did not apply to him.
Luciano saw his own pattern too: saving the company and family name while missing what mattered most—Theo.
That afternoon, Luciano visited Bernadette at her attorney’s office.
She was awaiting sentencing on fraud-related charges after agreeing to cooperate.
“I read Dad’s letter,” he said.
She lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“I believe you.”
She looked up quickly.
“But sorry doesn’t put you back in Theo’s life.”
Her face crumpled.
“I’m his grandmother.”
“And I’m his father. I’m done letting titles replace trust.”
She cried without speaking.
Luciano stood to leave.
“Will I ever see him again?”
“I don’t know.”
It was the first honest answer he had given her.
At the door, she called his name.
“Luciano.”
He turned.
“Your father wasn’t the one who carved THEO under that train.”
Luciano frowned.
“I know. I did.”
Bernadette shook her head.
May you like
“No. Look at the second letter.”
