Chapter 19 - THE NAME UNDER THE TRAIN

Luciano drove home with the locomotive on the passenger seat.

That evening, he took it into the workshop and placed it beneath the same lamp Antonio had used for decades.

Theo climbed onto the stool beside him.

“What are we doing?”

“Checking something Grandpa left us.”

Luciano examined the carved name.

THEO.

He remembered sanding the roof, painting the wheels, and burning a tiny 7 into the side.

But Bernadette was right.

He had not carved the name underneath.

Antonio had.

Luciano removed the base plate.

There, hidden beneath the axle, was another line so faint he almost missed it.

NOT THE HOUSE. THE BOY.

Theo squinted. “What does that mean?”

Luciano stared at the words until he understood.

Antonio’s old joke returned to him.

One day it may be worth more than the house.

The train had never been the valuable thing.

The house had never been the valuable thing.

Theo was.

Luciano gave a broken laugh.

Theo looked worried. “Daddy?”

“I’m okay.”

“You’re crying.”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

Luciano lifted him onto the workbench and held him.

“Because Grandpa was smarter than me.”

Theo smiled. “Grandpa said that a lot.”

Luciano laughed for real this time.

Three months later, Marcus was sentenced. Bernadette received a lesser sentence after cooperating, the stolen money was recovered, and the company removed Marcus permanently.

Luciano sold his city penthouse and moved full-time into the estate—not because it was grand, but because Theo loved the workshop and the woods.

He cut his work schedule in half, and both he and Theo went to therapy. Slowly, the house became safe again.

Then, one spring morning, Daniel arrived carrying a package postmarked from the county correctional facility.

It was addressed to Theo.

The sender was Marcus.
