Chapter 17 - THE ACCOUNT IN THEO’S NAME

Marcus had created a financial trap.

The stolen trust money had been moved into an investment account opened using Theo’s identity. If investigators had discovered it without the surrounding evidence, it could have looked as though Luciano himself had hidden assets in his son’s name.

Rachel stared at the records in disgust.

“He was setting you up.”

Daniel nodded. “If the incompetency petition failed, this was probably the backup plan.”

Luciano read the account opening date.

It was the day after Elena’s funeral.

He pushed the papers away.

Marcus had not mourned her for even twenty-four hours before beginning the next scheme.

The prosecutor offered no guarantees. Marcus would plead guilty to multiple felonies and cooperate with the financial investigation. The charge tied to Elena’s death would remain serious, but not the highest possible charge.

Luciano hated the deal, but trials were uncertain.

“What does Elena get?” he asked Daniel.

“Truth on the record.”

“That’s not enough.”

“No. It isn’t.”

“What does Theo get?”

“His money restored. His identity cleared. And a father who doesn’t spend two years in court chasing a verdict that may never come.”

Luciano looked through the window into Sofia’s backyard.

Theo was building a track in the snow for the wooden locomotive.

Luciano finally understood that revenge asked what Marcus deserved, while justice asked what Theo needed.

Luciano met with the prosecutor the next morning.

“I won’t fight the deal,” he said. “But I want one condition.”

“What?”

“Marcus never contacts Theo. Not through family. Not through letters. Not through anyone.”

“That can be addressed through protective orders and sentencing terms.”

Luciano nodded.

At the plea hearing, Marcus looked thinner, smaller, almost ordinary in county jail clothes.

He turned when Luciano entered.

Then Marcus smiled.

Not warmly.

Knowingly.

As he passed Luciano, he whispered, “You still don’t know everything about Mom.”

Luciano stopped walking.

Marcus kept going.

And for the first time in weeks, fear returned.
