Chapter 10 - The Blue Umbrella

The address belonged to a modest repair shop forty miles away.

A woman in work boots stood beneath an awning, replacing a cracked pane of glass.

She looked up as Mark approached, and he saw their father's eyes in her face.

"Hannah Whitcomb?"

"Depends who's asking."

"I'm Mark. Henry's son."

She set down the glass cutter.

"I know who you are."

Mark told her about Lily, the well, and the sale.

Hannah's expression hardened, but she didn't invite him inside.

"Your family took enough from me."

"I didn't know you existed until yesterday."

"That doesn't erase the years your mother spent making sure nobody believed me."

He took out Claire's envelope.

"Claire said to ask about the blue umbrella."

Hannah's hand flew to her mouth.

For a long moment, only traffic filled the silence.

"Your wife found me during a storm," she finally said. "Her umbrella was blue, and she gave it to me because I was standing outside the courthouse in the rain."

She led him into the shop and unlocked a cabinet.

Inside was a stack of letters from Claire and a battered notebook full of spring-water measurements.

Hannah explained that Henry's original trust protected free access and required water-quality monitoring.

After his death, Margarethe transferred land to shell companies and blocked the town's spring road.

"Claire discovered a record showing that the town's flood-warning equipment had been paid for by the trust," Hannah said. "But no equipment was installed."

Mark pictured the low houses along Mill Creek.

Children lived there.

His wife's handwritten notes marked the same neighborhood in red.

"What happens when the next storm comes?"

"The creek rises before anyone gets a warning."

Hannah showed him a new document on her laptop.

Blue Ridge Water had applied to remove the last old monitoring gate on Friday morning.

"The sale isn't the worst part," she said. "They're going to open the flood channel before the town even knows it's at risk."
