Chapter 16 - What the Shadow Meant

The greenhouse stood beyond the rose garden, its glass roof cloudy from years of neglect.

Mark brought Hannah, Samir, and Detective Ellis there at noon with a court-authorized inspection team.

Margarethe had refused them, but the court's order allowed inspection for records at risk of destruction.

At twelve exactly, the mansion's chimney cast a narrow shadow through the greenhouse door.

It ended at a stone slab beneath an old planting bench.

"Claire always liked puzzles," Mark said softly.

He had almost forgotten how she hid birthday presents behind riddles for him to solve.

Ellis photographed the slab before a technician lifted it.

Beneath was a dry metal document tube wrapped in oilcloth.

Inside lay certified copies of the family charter, bank transfers, and a sworn statement signed by Henry before a public notary seventeen years earlier.

There was also a small envelope addressed to Lily.

Mark read it privately while the technician cataloged the legal documents.

My brave girl, Claire had written, if grown-ups tell you to keep a secret that makes you frightened, tell Daddy. He will listen, even when the truth hurts.

Mark pressed the page against his chest.

Hannah scanned the charter.

"This isn't just a promise about a spring," she said. "It names the town's schools and families as permanent beneficiaries."

Samir read Henry's affidavit twice.

"If this was properly filed, no family member had power to sell the protected portion. We can prove the sale was unauthorized from the beginning."

He called the county records office to confirm the notarized document number.

The clerk fell silent.

"That record was withdrawn two years ago," she finally said.

"By whom?" Samir asked.

"A person using a court order bearing Mark Whitcomb's signature."

Mark closed his eyes.

Another signature stolen from him.

But this time they had the order number.
